Fleshtunes: The Bree Mills Edition

Bree Brings Fab Tunes!

Girlsway/Pretty Dirty producer/creative force of nature Bree Mills seemed, to me, like an awesome person to ask for her Fleshtunes because I knew they would be interesting ones. She was kind enough to take her picks a step further and tie her Fleshtunes to their relationships to some of her biggest movies. Enjoy these!

"I actually spent a good part of my 20s DJing and hosting new wave/post punk music parties... so my choices will likely be more avant-garde than most. But, how about this... I'll focus my selections on the music that I listened to while I wrote our Girlsway features. I always binge-listen to one specific album when writing so fans may be surprised at what ended up being the unofficial soundtrack to some of our movies.

"I Can't Wait" by Stevie Nicks: I was listening to a lot of Stevie around the time I wrote our first feature, "The Business of Women", so I associate her music a lot with that project and even the production itself. Several of our cast members were big Fleetwood Mac fans and had just gone to see them in concert right before the shoot, so they kind of became the unofficial soundtrack for all of us. As an 80s fanatic myself, I prefer the big-haired super cheesy Stevie Nicks... so this song sums that up perfectly.

"Add It Up" by The Violent Femmes: This may be a surprise... but I actually binge-listened to the Violent Femmes classic album all through the writing of "The Turning", our lesbian horror feature. I think I connected a lot of the angst felt by Halle White, played by Adriana Chechik, to the angst felt in lead singer Gordon Gano's lyrics. This song is a great example of that. Throughout the course of the song, he goes from quiet and introverted to angry and outspoken. Her performance was a lot along the same lines and I tried to write her dialogue with much the same vibe.

"Evil Coast" by The Mary Onettes: "Project Pandora" was a film about secrets, and in many ways, is the most emotional feature we've ever made. I found myself listening to a lot of indie rock at that time and was particularly fond of this Swedish rock group. For me, this particular song off their album "Hit the Waves" represented my mindset during the writing of this project and I can't help but think of this production whenever I hear it now.

"Miracle Mile" by Pilotpriest: Pilotpriest is a little-known Canadian electronica artist who was pretty much the ONLY thing I listened to while writing our award-winning crime thriller, "Missing". His album, Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, features electro-reimaginings of film scores from popular 80s movies and it's just an incredible album from start to finish. I was also falling in love at the time I wrote this and this particular track off that album absolutely reminds me of those early days of being with my now-fiance, Sara Luvv. So, it's a special song for several reasons.

"Need You Tonight" by INXS: During the summer of 2016, while writing our comedy "The Faces of Alice", I rediscovered just how great the INXS album KICK is. I would put it on as I started writing and, next thing I knew, the album had finished and I was back on track one again. This song, in particular, is just a perfect pop song: great hooks, clever lyrics, very sexy.
