Are Sexuality Morality Police Doing More Harm Than Good?

A few weeks ago I read an article on an online Malaysian newspaper about the Malaysian Morality Police. I wish I had bookmarked the article (so I can link it) alas, despite my best Google search efforts I can’t seem to find it! Anyway the article was about the Islamic Department in Malaysia and how they organise ‘raids’ on muslims they suspect are having sex before marriage which is ‘non-halal’ or not allowed in Islam.

Anyway, couples would get creative, and sometimes get a little frisky in parks, dark beaches, rented rooms (if they can afford it) wherever they think they might be safe. What jumped out to me in the article is that in order to conduct the raid, the department would recruit ‘volunteers’ from the general public. And together with their volunteers, hide in bushes to stalk couples and wait till they start having sex. After which they literally jump out at them from the dark and shine lights on them. They do this in a way to maximize embarrassment. They don’t give the naked couple any time to perhaps cover up, instead shining the light, usually only on the woman, insistently.

This sounds fucking ridiculous to me. Not only do they recruit any asshole who actually gets off on voyeurism but can safely hide behind his ‘duty’ to catch people ‘in the act’, they go all out it would seem, to embarrass and shame them too. I mean seriously, don’t we already have enough shit around our sexuality? Now there is this too?

Imagine if your experience of having sex is to be jumped on by 8 horny men, shamelessly shining lights on your bits without your consent, all claiming to be doing it for ‘your good’. I am foaming at the mouth. I feel I need to shower.

I know I am stirring a very large and potentially explosive pot here, but I am just about done with everyone else's religions telling me what is right for me. It’s easy to lay blame on religion, but honestly this busybody-I-know-best attitude is prevalent in all human beings, religious or not. Everyone wants their opinion to be the right one. Some are willing to get more violent about it than others.

I totally respect it if your religion doesn’t want you to do certain things and you are honoring it, but to scar people in this manner isn’t helping anyone. But perhaps the goal is to scare and control. People are viable to agree to many more things when vulnerable and naked. Reading that article put me in a bad mood all day. We are open to so many things in life, but somehow having sex, being sexual, being sensual and having any kind of sexual thought be it normal or kinky, outside of marriage is somehow looked ‘down’ upon. Perhaps not fully but certainly on many different levels. And having any kind of outside the box sexual thoughts is looked down upon whether married or not. It’s slowly starting to change but not quickly enough in my opinion.
