Spanish Theatre Company Looks To Boost Attendance By Selling Porn

In an effort to combat a coming tax hike on theatre tickets, one Spanish theatre company has decided to become a licensed pornography dealer. According to Orange News (link below), this isn't a move into a new avenue for the all-female troupe, but rather an attempt to bring in the crowds with porn mags. 

Spanish group Primas de Riesgo (Risk Premium) registered as a distributor of pornography and acquired about 300 back issues of a discontinued erotic magazine.

It is now selling the mags for £12.50 with each one including a free ticket to their production of The Prodigious Magician, by Pedro Calderon de la Barca, in Madrid.

You may be wondering how drastic this tax hike was to force them into such drastic measures. Well, it was steep...

The Spanish government raised the tax on tickets to movies, plays and concerts from eight to 21% as part of its efforts to reduce its defecit.

However, the tax on magazines remained at a relatively low four per cent and the theatre group used this loophole to avoid charging theatre goers the higher tax rate.

Primas de Riesgo director Karina Garantiva said: "We want people to ask what kind of a society makes this kind of decision. That they compare pornography and Calderon, who is Spain's Shakespeare, and reach their own conclusions."

At the very least, this company is bringing a new meaning to the term climax... I'll show myself out.
