Hair Restoration: Original Illustrations From ‘Joy of Sex’

null

The Joy of Sex is one of those watershed tomes in the history of human sexuality, and a new exhibit at the Institute of Sexology exhibit at the Wellcome Collection in London will give many visitors a look at the original drawings done by artist Chris Foss for the book.

According to The Guardian (link below), the first edition of the book contained these drawings of bearded men and women sporting healthy thatches of pubic and underarm hair, but these images were removed from all subsequent editions.

Later editions of Alex Comfort’s “gourmet guide to lovemaking”, inspired by cookery books of the day, used photographs of a clean-shaven man, but the 1972 original had delicate line drawings and watercolours showing a bearded man, and a woman with pubic and underarm hair, enjoying sex in many positions.

The black-and-white line drawings by Chris Foss were based on photographs he took of a man he knew well: his colleague Charles Raymond, who was responsible for the colour illustrations.

The exhibit will be open through September 20, 2015, and admission is free, so fans of beards and bushes should definitely think about making the pilgrimage.
