The Starz! network is truly desperate for a hit series to keep up with the HBOs and Showtimes of the world. Therefore they've announced that their sexy pirate drama Black Sails has been renewed for a third season, three months before the second season even premieres.

According to Deadline (link below), the Michael Bay-produced series was all but guaranteed a third season, but the official announcement didn't come down until this past weekend's New York Comic Con.

Black Sails is set 20 years before Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Treasure Island and chronicles the tales of Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) and his men, including young John Silver (Luke Arnold). Hannah New, Tadgh Murphy, and Zach McGowan also star. Season 1 debuted to 2.6 million Live+Same Day viewers during its opening weekend last January, setting a viewership record for a Starz original series. Jonathan Steinberg and Robert Levine are the creators and executive producers, with Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form also EPs.

“The incredible world that Jon Steinberg and Robert Levine have created continues to unfold in season two. Flint’s journey is riveting, and around him, Jon and Robert have woven an intricate web of conflict, betrayal, and redemption for the other characters that we believe will keep fans of the show coming back for more,” said Carmi Zlotnik, managing director of Starz.

Sure, all that. What we're really interested in is more nudity. We demand more of it this season, and maybe fewer merkins, too. Between this and DaVinci's Demons, Starz! has an unhealthy obsession with merkins.
