Some porn sites are able to deliver high quality smut in such a simple and well-organized manner that it makes the coming war between humans and robots seem like the segue to a bright future. I happily submit to Girlfriends Films Member Site: today I give my cash, tomorrow perhaps my bioelectrical energy (you know, like in "The Matrix").
We've been fans of the oddly-pluralized Girlfriends Films for a long time, and their award-winning girl-on-girl porn is only one part of our obsession. The production company is actually the evolved form of a documentary on lesbian sex dreamed up by students in a UCLA filmmaking class; somehow, they've managed to keep all the passion, focus, and curiosity from their original project and translate that into one of the most successful businesses in the adult industry.
What does GFF do with all that success? They give their attention—and a bunch of their profits—where it's needed most. Girlfriends Films Charities has been giving money to worthy causes and organizations since 2006: Doctors Without Borders, Planned Parenthood, NPR, Homes For Our Troops, and the Animal Welfare Institute make up a small sample of places that have received $1,000 donations from Girlfriends Films. This might not be the kind of thing that convinces you to buy lesbian movies from a company, but it's nice to know that such brilliant pornographers also have huge hearts.
And frankly, you can feel their big hearts pulsing through their new members' site. Browsing through all of their movies, scenes, and series, I felt that everything had been designed with a gentle, considerate hand; they anticipated my every perverted want, fed me the information I desired before I even desired it, and constantly guided me towards more delicious porn. Speaking of which...
Movies: Where do I begin? There are over 200 scenes from 55 different movies, and every last one of their 35 different series are represented. You get "Twisted Passions," "Pin-Up Girls," "Lesbian Psychotherapists," "Lesbian Bridal Stories," behind-the-scenes footage, talk shows, and even a huge collection of scenes from "Women Seeking Women," winner of AVN's Best All-Girl Series four years in a row!
Over 200 models are listed in their directory, and you can find and follow pornstars and small-time performers of all ages just by clicking the Favorite button. It'd be nice if they featured more women of color, but beyond that, Girlfriends Films has everything you could possibly want from lesbian porn. Kittens screwing cougars? They're everywhere. Girls dressing like boys and getting tag-teamed by girls? Easy to find. Vague incestuous undertones? They're available in vague, mild, and very obviously incestuous. And speaking of availability, every movie clip comes streaming (in low- and high-definition) but is downloadable as well.
There's so much stuff on this site that we wonder what keeps this lumbering behemoth from tripping on its own feet.
Accessibility: If you're wondering how much I love the ease of navigation on this website, consider the fact that I had to make a whole new section (this one right here) to discuss it.
Some paysites give you a login, a huge archive of smut, and let you navigate the mess by your lonesome. Girlfriends Films, however, has a tag system, easy favorite marking, multiple search pages and styles, model profiles, and many other tiny details that allow you to find the stuff you're craving, discover something new, and even track where you've been. There's even a preferences page where you can choose how all this information is presented!
For example: you can choose how tags look. Do you want cloud tags? Spherical tags? I, personally, couldn't care less, but I am so fucking happy that they asked because no one has ever asked it before.
How do you access this stuff? Do you have to follow a horribly labyrinth of options and tiny links that lead you to confusing back alleys of uselessness. NAW. There's a little "Control Panel" at the top of every page; click it, and a small, elegant menu slides down. From there, you can go to your preferences page, your account page, the support center, and all of your favorite models, scenes, movies, and shows.
And what is that at the bottom of every page? Oh, it's just a little bar that tells you where you've been on the site. Yes. Thank you. That is exactly what I fucking needed. It's such a simple idea, so subtly thrown in there, and yet this could save so many users from getting lost on the five-hour long search for two minutes of masturbation material. Real talk: these features turn me on just as much as the actual porn does. That's probably a sign that I need a new job.
I should note that the website was developed in part by Abby Winters, so they deserve props as well. Brilliant work here, Abby.
Photos: Pictures aren't emphasized at all, but they're always there if you want them! Every clip comes accompanied by a gallery of screen caps, available as a pop-up slide show and a zip file. I, personally, would like some photos with better resolution—and I know Girlfriends Films has them tucked away in a marketing folder somewhere—but the focus is on movies, and that's how it is.
Other Awesome, Somewhat Unclassifiable Stuff: I think I've hit all of the tiny points that make Girlfriends Films Members Site so fun, but I would like to pay special tribute to "The Kinky & Creepy Show," a web series consisting of honest, open interviews with pornstars, directors, and producers in the GFF community. It's hosted by Elexis Monroe and Dana DeArmond, and even though it could use a little more editing, it's always an educational delight.
For those of you who want to connect with the larger community of GFF fans, there's a nifty forum featuring reviews, questions, comments, concerns, advice, and other user-generated content.
All in all, it's pretty hard to complain about this site. Ok, the color scheme of lilac, violet, white, red, and green is pretty fugly. Also, the site is updated frequently, but not always with new material. For example, the most recent update is from "Lesbian Legal 3," a movie that came out in 2009. It's a bummer, but it makes perfect sense; Girlfriends Films has such a large catalog of movies that they can afford to only show ten of the 73 "Women Seeking Women" films at a time. Therefore, this might not be the place to go if you want to see all of their current work.
That being said, it's still a phenomenal destination, and the pricing isn't half-bad: $24.95 for one month, $64.95 for 3, $104.95 for 6, or $189.95 for a whole year. I'd gladly compare these prices to those of a similar site, but there aren't any sites like this. It's extremely rare to find a DVD company that puts a large part of their wares on a paysite, includes a large dose of web-exclusive material, and cares enough about their product to make place run smoothly and efficiently.
I'm damn impressed with Girlfriends Films Member Site, even if I feel like they need more apostrophes.
