A Field Guide To Naomie Harris

CELEBRITY

A Field Guide To Naomie HarrisYesterday, we showed you the boobs of Berenice Marlohe, one of the next Bond girls. However, we then realized that we forgot to talk about the other next Bond girl—the first black woman to ever play Miss Moneypenny—Naomie Harris.

Naomie Melanie Harris was born in London on September 6, 1976, and she was raised by her mother, sitcom writer Lisselle Kayla. She was interesting in acting from an early age, and she enrolled in an after-school program at the Anna Scher Theatre School. As dedicated as she was (and is) to her acting career, Harris took time to get her degree in Social and Political Sciences from Cambridge before receiving professional dramatic training from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Harris has been appearing on TV and film since she was nine, but she didn't receive international attention until 2002 when she starred in the horrifying fast-zombie thriller, "28 Days Later." It's hard to imagine someone receiving high-praise for wielding a machete against the undead (er, virus-infected, whatever), but Harris's image as a badass beauty helped land her bigger roles and even earned her the Black Reel Award for Best Breakthrough Performance in 2004.

Most people known Naomie Harris from her time as Tia Dalma/Calypso in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." She proved that she could easily swagger and seduce with the likes of Johnny Depp. Between those films, she played a sexy detective in "Miami Vice." Of course, she's not all big-budget blockbusters and sexiness; Harris can do historical TV-movie drama (as in "Small Island"), comedic indie ensemble pieces ("A Cock and Bull Story"), and even live theater. She notes,

"I have many different sides; I can be the life and soul of the party – or a wallflower. But what I love about being an actor is the leap into being someone else. I think my roles have been wonderfully varied. Not one has been racially stereotypical, and I have purposely chosen them like that."

She says that if she could be in any role, she'd want to play Elizabeth Bennet in "Pride and Prejudice."

Though we also dream of seeing her in an Austen adaptation, we're stoked that she's going to be in the next James Bond movie, "Skyfall," coming out in 2012. Her involvement in the film was announced a few days ago, and there was initial confusion about who she's playing. If she's playing Miss Moneypenny—M's personal secretary—why is she training to be a field agent? It turns out that she's starting off as a field agent, Eve, and then somehow getting a desk job at MI6 headquarters. We'd love to see Harris running and gunning, but the way we see it, she gets less bodily harm and more opportunities to flirt with Daniel Craig.

Now, the only question is whether or not we'll get to see Harris's yoga-cut body in "Skyfall." We can't wait!
