Smart Is Sexy & Angela White Has Those Qualities To Spare: The Fleshbot Interview

PORNSTARS

In the mainstream world, actors and actresses have been coming from Australia and hitting the big time in the States for decades now. It's been a much more steep uphill battle for adult industry performers to break out, namely because of Australia's somewhat barbaric laws prohibiting certain aspects of sex, nudity, and pornography. Angela White seems to have bucked that trend, however, making a name for herself in a very short time here in the US.

Angela's got a ton of heat surrounding her right now, thanks to three major projects she's currently promoting. The first two are her "Win a Date with Angela White" promotion she's doing with Fleshlight, and her new line of toys being released by the company molded on her anatomy. The third is her self-titled film Angela, being released by Girlfriends Films, which features a ton of firsts for the buxom beauty: Her first anal, first interracial, and first double penetration scenes. I chatted with Angela via e-mail recently to discuss these projects, as well as her controversial library scene, and her 2010 run for public office Down Under.

Tucker Bankshot: When did you first become aware of the adult industry and did that coincide with you realizing that it was something you wanted to do for a living, or were those two separate moments?

Angela White: The moment I first saw pornography I wanted to be a part of it. Growing up, I had been chastised for my sexuality. I was teased in high school for being both a slut and a lesbian; so at one and the same time I was accused of fucking too many men and not enough. My sexual appetite intimidated my partners and I had a hard time trying to fit myself into the monogamous blueprint. By the time I was 14, I was already voluptuous so I also felt that my body didn’t fit with the beauty standards I was confronted with in the mainstream media.

When I discovered pornography at the same age, I saw a celebration of diverse bodies, pleasures and desires. I saw a space in which I could explore my sexuality with multiple partners of any gender with peers that would support and encourage me. The industry may not have turned out to be the utopia I imagined it to be in my teens, it is a capitalist enterprise after all. But my personal experience within pornography has been incredibly positive in terms of both my sexual development and my body image.

TB: Living in Australia where there are very specific censorship laws regarding what parts of the female anatomy can be presented, and how they’re presented, did you have to fight an uphill battle to do what you do?

AW: Being based in Australia has meant that everything I’ve done in the adult industry has been an uphill battle. Having to base my production company in the Netherlands and shoot the vast majority of my content in the USA and Europe has presented multiple challenges. It is disappointing that the laws in Australia do not reflect community standards. But every country has its own issues.

TB: Can you talk a bit about your “Win a Date” promo for Fleshlight? What was the genesis for that, were you approached to do it or did you have the idea and then approach the people at Fleshlight?

AW: Fleshlight approached me about it. They had a lot of success with the Win a Date contests with Lisa Ann and Alexis Texas so they asked if I’d like to participate in a similar competition. I jumped at the opportunity! I enjoy connecting with my fans and I spend a lot of time interacting with them on social media, through my website and live on webcam.

I have a lot of respect for my fans and I knew this would be an opportunity for me to make one lucky fan’s dreams come true. The winner and I will go to dinner together and then share the magical moments at the AVN Awards show as my peers are acknowledged for their great achievements. It will be a night to remember for both of us.

TB: Can you also talk about the library scene you shot at the University of La Trobe? Did you think that was going to blow up the way it did, or were you surprised by all the hoopla surrounding it?

AW: I was completely taken aback when the library scene went viral. I wasn’t even going to release it and it turned out to be the most popular scene I’ve ever shot. It was a spur of the moment thing, with my former lover. I actually tried really hard to make sure that the library was not identifiable but I guess the Internet knows everything. It ended up making news worldwide which really surprised me. I hope it encouraged a few people to visit their local library.

TB: You have earned Honors in Gender Studies at the University of Melbourne, and have subsequently studied gender politics in France. Do you find that pornography has the power to transcend the so-called misogynist tendencies that most people associate with the industry, and if so, how do you attempt to achieve that?

AW: Let me just begin by conceding that a lot of pornography does perpetuate sexist, racist, homophobic and ableist stereotypes. But so does the majority of mainstream media in the West. This doesn’t make it OK, it just recognizes that pornography isn’t any more or less misogynistic than our culture at large. But I do feel that pornography has the ability to transgress and subvert many stereotypes. It’s one of the only forms of media that celebrates diverse body types; particularly in niche, alternative, sex-positive and queer pornography.

And pornography represents and celebrates women as sexual beings and as agents in their own pleasure. I have my own feminist agenda and a long-term plan to realize it, but for the moment I am engaging in pornography as a way to explore my sexuality on my own terms and conveying, through my own example, the message that nobody should be ashamed of their sexual identity or desires.

TB: What led you to create your own production company? Was it a desire to produce content that you weren’t seeing represented in the industry or was it more of a natural evolution from where you started and what you hoped to achieve?

AW: I started my production company so that I could record my sexual journey. My sexuality has evolved through my involvement in pornography and having control over production allows me to express and explore my sexuality on my own terms. The scenes I produce are a reflection of my desires and fantasies.

I also alluded to a long term plan in my previous answer and part of this plan will be to produce some truly unique content that I do not see represented in pornography right now. But at this time, there are still some boxes I want to tick off for myself that may not be unique to the porn world but are things I have yet to experience.

TB: It’s actually becoming more commonplace in the States to see adult industry professionals run for public office. What led you to run for office in Australia in 2010?

AW: I was motivated to run for the seat of Richmond when I found out that Kathleen Maltzahn, the candidate for the Greens Party, was planning on criminalizing the sex industry and banning brothels if she won the seat. I advocated for the decriminalization of all aspects of the sex industry since criminal legislation pushes sex work underground making it unsafe for workers but also for clients.

It was very disappointing to see the Greens Party run Maltzahn, because they generally have good policies when it comes to issues of sex and gender. My main objective was to make sure Maltzahn did not win the seat and to this end my campaign was a success.

TB: What do you think is the hottest scene that you’ve done, or maybe a top three if you can’t pick just one?

AW: Based on public opinion the hottest scene has to be the library scene. My first interracial scene with Lexington Steele has also gotten a lot of attention. Personally, I hate choosing favorites because I have a unique experience and chemistry with everyone that I have the pleasure of fucking. It’s like comparing apples and oranges.

TB: Is there anyone you haven’t worked with yet that you’re dying to work with?

AW: My list is so long! Tori Black, Remy LaCroix, Carter Cruise, Misty Stone, Rocco Siffredi, Nacho Vidal to name just a few.

TB: Anything else you’d like your fans to know or perhaps anyone that’s discovering you for the first time?

AW: I’d love to thank all my fans for their consistent support during my entire journey in porn. If you’re learning about me for the first time thank you for taking the time to read this. You can learn more about me on my website http://angelawhite.com or follow me on twitter @angelawhite to see what I’m up to. I also just teamed up with Girlfriends Films to release my first anal, first interracial and first double penetration DVD entitled “ANGELA”. It is still the number 1 current bestseller on Adult DVD Empire. So a big THANK YOU to all of my fans, this would not have been possible without your support!
