By now, politicians should have learned a few things about social media:
1. Never write, post or say anything on your Facebook account you wouldn’t also say with a TV news crew’s camera right in front of your face.
2. Don’t Like, Follow, Thumbs-Up or Re-Tweet things your campaign manager will want to throttle you for liking, following, thumbs-upping or re-tweeting.
3. If you get caught doing something with social media which is unbefitting of a person in your exalted (and elected) position, don’t lie about what happened, because that only makes things worse.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has done just fine with number one from the list above, but he might need a refresher of sorts with respect to numbers two and/or three.
You see, it appears Mr. Bellone, or someone operating Mr. Bellone’s Twitter account, recently followed Belle Knox, the so-called “Duke Porn Star,” and this has caused something of a media kerfuffle for Ballone.
Naturally, facing questions about his controversial choice of follow, Bellone came out with a strong defense of his Constitutionally-guaranteed right to look at the naughty pictures and videos Knox occasionally posts to promote her sexually-explicit expressive works, right?
Eh…. Not exactly.
“County Executive Bellone’s Twitter account, which is operated by his staff, has been hacked and an obscene Twitter account was subsequently followed,” said Bellone’s spokeswoman, Vanessa Baird-Streeter. “A formal complaint has been filed with Twitter and to the third-party software used to assist in managing the account. His staff has instituted stricter security protocols to ensure an incident like this does not happen in the future.”
Seriously? The account was “hacked”? You actually want me to believe hackers bothered to compromise the Twitter account of a hitherto unheard-of County Executive, solely for the purpose of following a porn star?
Did the hackers eat Mr. Bellone’s homework, too?
My guess? Either Mr. Bellone is entirely full of shit and slightly confused as to how Twitter works (and, specifically, how visible one’s “follows” are), or one of his staffers did it, either in a moment of confusion thinking it was his/her own account, as an act of malice, or as a misguided practical joke.
Those are plausible explanations, at least; the explanation hackers compromised the account of the Director of Who Gives a Shit from Suffolk County, on the other hand…. Let’s just say I have my doubts.
Part of the reason for my skepticism is even the most trivial and inane hack usually has some kind of point behind it.
If the person being hacked is a “nobody,” then it’s going to be financial information, or the use of the person’s computer resources the hacker is interested in, most likely. I can’t see an actual hacker bothering with exploiting the Twitter account of person who isn’t already in the news, unless there’s a personal motive involved.
Maybe that’s it: Maybe Mr. Bellone cut off a member of Anonymous in traffic the other day, and he’s now simply reaping what he has unwittingly sewn. I doubt it, but it’s a great big world out there, and just about anything is possible. Hell, maybe Anthony Wiener hacked Bellone, trying to at least assure he’s not the only New York politician to have his career derailed in a social media train wreck.
At any rate, about the only thing more useless than lying about the source of mild social media embarrassment is treating it like someone just penetrated the White House bunker and stole ICBM launch codes. I suspect Twitter and the aforementioned third-party app provider will give Mr. Ballone’s “formal complaint” all the attention it deserves – by printing it out, tacking it to a billboard next to the water cooler in the break room and laughing at it for days.
