“Some Unusual Behavior” & Other Stupid Phrases The MPAA Has Coined

In addition to making many, many, many asinine decisions, the Motion Picture Association of America—aka the ratings board—also has a glorious history of coining odd new phrases when listing their ratings reasons for some films. Take Fifty Shades of Grey for example, which recently secured an R rating for, among other things, "some unusual behavior."

This unusual behavior more than likely relates to the title character's obsession with a highly abusive form of BDSM, and not his unhealthy obsession with Cyndi Lauper. Though some of the film's fans were hoping it might be slapped with an NC-17, the complete and total commercial unviability of that rating has made it useless in this country. Nevertheless, the phrase "some unusual behavior" is just the latest in a long line of hilariously worded phrases selected by the ratings board to alert parents to potentially untoward content. ‘The Brady Bunch Movie’: Rated PG-13 “for racy innuendos.”

‘Demolition Man’: Rated R for “non-stop action violence, and for strong language.”

I remember a bunch of action violence in Demolition Man, but it wasn't non-stop. There was that whole sequence where Sly tried to bang pre-nose job Sandy Bullock and the conversation about seashells. That's hardly non-stop in my book.

‘Team America: World Police’: Rated R for “graphic crude and sexual humor, violent images and strong language—all involving puppets.”

‘Twister’: Rated PG-13 for “intense depiction of very bad weather.”

I love picturing the parent who didn't know that a film titled Twister—with a funnel cloud right on the poster—would feature intense depictions of very bad weather. I want to meet that parent actually... and punch them.

‘Ghost Brigade’: Rated R for “satanic war violence.”

‘War of the Buttons’: Rated PG for “mischievous conflict, some mild language and bare bottoms.”

I also love how the MPAA turned into my grandmother halfway through that War of the Buttons one.

‘The Skateboard Kid 2': Rated PG for “brief mild language and an adolescent punch in the nose.”

Gah! Spoilers, MPAA, spoilers! You've just totally killed all of the suspense in The Skateboard Kid 2 for me.
