Facebook Defines What Is And Isn’t Nudity

Facebook has joined the bandwagon of websites deciding what is and isn’t an acceptable amount of skin. The company recently updated their community standards to define what types of nudity are acceptable.  

According to Facebook nudity is defined as genitals, fully exposed buttocks, and female breasts, but only if the nipple is including. Getting a pass on the nudity standards, women breastfeeding and showing off post-mastectomy scars (is that thing?). Along with other websites like reddit, Facebook will also crack down on revenge porn or any other posts with sexual images of another person posted without their permission.    

"It's a challenge to maintain one set of standards that meets the needs of a diverse global community," said Monika Bickert, Facebook's head of global policy management, and Chris Sonderby, Facebook's deputy general counsel, in a blog post. "For one thing, people from different backgrounds may have different ideas about what's appropriate to share -- a video posted as a joke by one person might be upsetting to someone else, but it may not violate our standards."

Due to the issues the social media giant has run into with various groups (taking down posts, banning groups, not allowing drag queens to use their stage names) the company hopes the new rules will bring a little consistency what is and isn’t allowed. Of course, Facebook acknowledges that no rules will be perfect and they will continue to address issues on a case-by-case basis.
