Naked Ambition

While women who appear in pornography constitute, after novelty ring tones, the largest bloc of media real estate, the female entrepreneurs, marketers, and pundits of the porn industry haven't had a forum to express what makes them tick. Carly Milne seeks to remedy that in her first book, "Naked Ambition". Milne, a former porn publicist, gathered 31 movers and shakers from her industry rolodex and asked them to hold forth about being a woman behind the camera, the keyboard, or the QuickBooks login. Milne worked in the adult industry, she said, with the aim of making a book out of it. "Naked Ambition", divided into four sections dedicated to wanton webmistresses (Joanna Angel wrote a chapter on her experience running BurningAngel.com before her more recent celluloid breakthrough), porn purveyors (of which Fleshbot's own Violet Blue is one), erotic envisioners (Holly Randall talks about sneaking into the porn closet of her mother, Suze Randall, when her parents left the house), and sex sellers like Theresa Flynt, who didn't realize her father was a "pioneer" until she watched "The People vs. Larry Flynt".

Milne doesn't play favorites, but she notes the impact women have had on companies like Wicked Pictures.

"Joy King, who helped to 'launch' Jenna Jameson and helped to make Wicked Pictures with her canny publicity, recounts a rich 18-year history in the business," Milne said. Wicked writer, director, and star Stormy recalls how being a fan of the company led to her career-long association with it.

The book does not reach a conclusion about the female experience in porn. Instead, Milne created a structure whereby participants could weigh in with several viewpoints on similar topics.

"I gave each writer carte blanche within a theme," Milne said, and a few of those writers, such as Violet Blue, Wired.com's Regina Lynn, Variety's Dana Harris, Holly Randall, Nina Hartley, Katie Smith, Retro Raunch's Hester Nash, PurePlay Media's art director Jodie Marie, Joanna Angel, and Theresa Flynt will be on hand for a reading and launch party at Hustler Hollywood on the Sunset Strip next Thursday night.
