After watching this 51-minute scene from Shoplyfter, I despair for the future of the legal profession. “Case No. 7906172 The Law Student” features a pre-law student who must be so pre-law that she hasn’t yet learned how to spell the word “law.”

We know this not because we can see his face, which is blurred, but because his name is listed in the credits and he introduces himself. We know he’s the loss prevention officer of the day because he’s wearing the uniform and has the keys to the kingdom. Or at least to the loss prevention office.

She’s in the loss prevention office because she’s attempted to steal a remarkably large and expensive book which was, for reasons never explained, out and available on a shelf where it could be stolen instead of behind glass where it would have to be requested. Oh, right. Porn doesn’t have to make sense. I mean, if I can accept that Nicole’s character is a pre-law student, I should be able to accept just about anything. Except Nicole’s lies. They’re utterly unconvincing, which is a bad trait for anyone who wants to be a litigating attorney. Let’s hope she uses her mouth better in other ways.

Jack gives her an opportunity to prove her worth soon, after he reviews the surveillance footage. Then begins the “Am I detained,” “No,” Then am I free to go,” “No,” games. These are followed by the “I’ve got some good news and bad news” games.
