The XCritic Interview: Cherie DeVille

XCRITIC

What is it that a performer must do in order to be the Performer of the Year in any genre, with any company, in any time period? Fist and foremost, this performer must be the epitome of sexual. She must be a woman who at first glance will not only make your heart skip a beat in terms of romance, fantasy, and lust, she must physically take you BPM to rates that make you feel as if you are not yourself. The second thing I believe she must do is have the ability to make every scene and every person she works with becoming the scene you must see. Create a buzz with just a button push on her social media. Now, the third and always forgotten requirement in my view, is that she must do everything 5-Star or better. No matter if she is camming, feature dancing, acting in a skit, playing a non-sex role, going toe to toe with the biggest stars in a blow-bang and the least known stars in a stepmom lesbian orgy. I do not think there are many people that fit this bill and have the personality of businesswoman, entertainer and true girl next door. Cherie DeVille is one of them. As we get set for awards season and another run of guessing who the best in the business is, I had to sit down with a woman who truly is just that in so many people’s eyes and talk about a film that is groundbreaking and a truly first of it’s kind where so many starlets met to do something we hardly ever see unless it is Cherie that is and make something that the fans want to see.

Cherie DeVille

Don JuanTo jump right into this thing, I have heard the story about how you started, and you have a very faithful fan following so I figured I would begin someplace else in this interview. I have been dying to ask you this for years. What was it like for you when you stepped on your first big production? I ask this because I do not see you as a person who is nervous.

Cherie DeVille: Well, I do not know if nervous is the right word, but I always get excited before a scene whenever I am on set. Especially if it is with someone that I have never gotten to work with before. Nervous, well I think that the best way to say what I feel is a lot of energy. Now, the film that was my first feature. Hhhhhmmm, I would say the first big set, big production that I was on set for was Project Pandora. I felt like they were giving me the responsibility of the movie. I was the main character, I had a ton of dialogue I needed to memorize, and I said to myself, “this is the first company that is trusting me to seriously not screw the pooch.” (We laugh and what is amazing about Cherie, she has this casual, sophisticated, yet grounded way she speaks. She is like that beautiful woman at board meetings who speaks up, has all these ideas, all this energy, then you go to say hello to her, and she is happier to meet you than you are her. Her vernacular is old school and intelligent, something that fits her like a glove.) I felt that weight massively on my shoulders. That was one of my favorite projects. That was the first BIIIIIIIGGGGG production I was on and I loved every second of it. How is that?

Don JuanWow, so it was you working with Alan and Bree in this massive creation huh?

Cherie DeVille: Yes, in terms of the first massive production where I was the star was with them, yes.

Don Juan: I think that is amazing. You are working with Alan and it is him creating these massive stories and I love that man’s meticulousness. I can only imagine what it was like for all of you together on that set.

Cherie DeVille: Yes, he has that passion and he is such an amazing photographer too.

Don JuanSo here I am picturing those two great filmmakers and here they are getting to see this new side of Cherie DeVille. One that has her getting that massive role, that massive look. What was that like?

Cherie DeVille: Well, we had a comfort together. I had the pleasure of doing some work with them prior to this and that made things a little easier when I learned that this was one of the biggest stories and scripts that Alan had ever written for that company at that time, so that is awesome. (Cherie giggles and it is that type of giggle you would picture a video gamer let off after she has defeated Bowser for the tenth time. The only way I can describe it, is I sit here listening to our recording and she reminds me of my sister when we would play Donkey Kong Country back in the day. Her laugh, the way she projects how she feels with her voice, you can tell she loves what she speaks of and that it is a fond memory.)

Don JuanThat is so cool! I am picturing you coming onto that set and fucking destroying it, which is fucking awesome by the way.

Cherie DeVille: Yeah, I loved it. I really loved it. Again, there is something that I think makes that film so special to me. I have been in a few big features since then, but it is that first one that really makes you feel like you made it. (That wonderful, amazing, infectious laugh again. I am listening to it and it makes me start laughing and smiling. Words can not describe it.)

Cherie DeVille

Don Juan: Oh, my goodness, that had to be so fun for you. I remember when I first met you in Texas face to face and we were talking about dancing, acting and performing, it is something that is very special in this life. Oh, my gawd, you had to have been in heaven woman!

Cherie DeVille: Yes, it was something very wonderful. (We both simply continue our fits of joyful laughter together. I mean if you were a fly on the wall and you did not know what is going on. It would sound like two nerds having a ball. It is the only way I can describe the fun of that day.)

Don Juan: I am going to be thinking about this all day. Being a writer, I am always trying to picture what the mood is, what the creation process is with such great performers and artists. You have created a vision in my head that I will be going over and over again scrupulously. I can imagine you going through wardrobe.

Cherie DeVille: Yes, I have a little keepsake that is only from me and it is something from set that I got to have a part of my character as a little keepsake from my first big production. I do not think that it has any monetary value, but it is something that I treasure very much and will always have with me to remind me of these great moments in my life.

Don JuanYay! No, that is something that is priceless. Those are the things that last forever in the heart and mind. You are walking right into my next question. You and I have something in common, we both found this business, not for monetary purposes. I myself said this beats the shit out of being around “mainstream” people and musicians who are cranky all the time. The people in this business mean so much to me and are why I am truly here. When you are around people who enjoy what they are doing, you can not ask for anything better in life. When I first met you, the thing I have always wanted to find out is where did you get your amazing work ethic from?

[INSERT_AD]

Cherie DeVille: My parents! Right! I mean it is either in me or it is from my parents. They are as hard-working and successful as I am. So, whether it was passed down genetically, or something that is brought about from a person’s environment they are surrounded by. My parents are retired now but they were always super hard working. My mother was a stay at home mom. If there were times that I forgot my lunch at home my Mom would bring it to me. My parents always went above and beyond in everything that they did. No matter what the activity was, no matter what their work-life brought about they were always doing more, giving more. I can remember my sister traveling for competitive soccer and my parents still finding ways to adjust their lives so that they could take me to my activities. They were always there, always in motion. My life was in motion back then and that led to my adult life always being in motion. I guess my entire life has been in constant motion and that is the way that I like it. I feel like there is a lot of value in being productive. It is an answer to the existential question, “why are we here?” I do not believe in the afterlife. I don’t think there is anything after our time on this earth. Which is why I think it is imperative to have a happy and productive life but also for society. I find that a choice to be lazy and unproductive as a waste of your life and your time on this planet. Your time is valuable. Your time is meaningful while you are here. I guess you can say that I get a lot of pleasure out of being productive in my life and with my time. It is pleasurable to know that I am busy and active, but it is also pleasurable to know that I am contributing to something.

Cherie DeVille

Don Juan: You are fucking awesome. I believe the same thing in life. I can not believe that it has been five years since we met and when we did, it was this thinking and those actions of yours that made my work time seem nothing like work. Now I know the story behind such passion and drive. Just amazing Cherie! You know, I think that is what inspires other people, is such things as you say and the work ethic we show.

Cherie DeVille: Yes, you spoke about seeing me act kind and happy and how much that motivated you. I think that is one of the most important things a person can do in their life is surround themselves with people who inspire them like this. Not just emotionally but be inspiring in all aspects of their lives. My best friend Dani Daniels, I am so going to cry, (Yes, Cherie begins to cry. This amazing human being, after we shared stories of inspiration in our career and lives speaks of her best friend and you hear her cry tears of joy. I have never been so moved in my life. I sit trying to hold my tears back as she speaks with this sobbing yet joyful tone.) I am so inspired by her, oh my goodness, I just love her so much. Everything about her. Her work. Her time she spends in daily life, everything about her is just so wonderful. It is just inspiring and when you have people like that in your life who inspire you, it makes you become inspirational. Once again, it is a must to not be around those who are lazy, who are drug addicts, or whatever it is that negative. You cannot pick your family, but you can pick your friends. So, make sure that you are always picking wonderful, supportive, inspiring people. When you have someone who crushes the game in their life in every meaning of the word, it will allow you to see that you can do this also. People like that, when you go up, they go up. When they go up, you go up. It is something that is symbiotic.

Don Juan: You have to have that type of support group in your life.

Don JuanIt is the basis of community. You plant seeds and enrich everything around you and watch things blossom.

Cherie DeVille: Yes, you are enriched by everything that is around you as well. You can also be brought down by what is around you. If all the people around you are lazy and poorly motivated, how are you going to feel motivated to do anything to achieve your goals? This reminds me a lot of when I lived in Nashville and I did a lot of swing dancing. I was one of the better dancers there and during the five years that I was there, I did not go out very much. Then, when I moved to Washington D.C. there are so many good dancers that were so much better than I was. So, every time I went out, I improved because I simply got to watch other incredibly talented people around me, and I felt so inspired. So, by having people around you who are talented, maybe even more talented than you, that is how you get better, that is how you learn and succeed. If you are the biggest fish in the pond, what other way are you going to get better?

Don JuanWith that said, I would love for you to take us through a day in the life of go-getter Cherie DeVille! I have heard so much about what your day may consist of from producers, directors, your fellow performers. This is something I think every fan who is inspired and loves your work is dying to know. I simply must know what consists of a true go-getter’s day.

Cherie DeVille

Cherie Deville: Well, on most days I am shooting for other companies. Depending on my call time, I will get up really early so that I can do a lot of posts on my Snap Chat. I do a lot of things with my Snap Chat and even more on my premium Snap Chat and I post a show every day on that platform. So, I wake up, I post my show, I organize all my social materials for the day. What I like to do is get everything ready on my phone so that I can just post and post and post all day long even if I am on set and can not post as often. Most sets, like a gonzo set, I will be there for about four to five hours. If I am shooting a vignette, I can be on set anywhere from five to eight hours. If it is a feature the days can truly go anywhere from twelve hours and beyond. After I have finished my day on set, I will come home and either get my show ready for snapchat for the next day or go to the gym depending on what my day was like. After that, things get pretty laid back. I will come home, play video games, hang out with friends, things like that. Some nights will consist of me having someone over and building content for one of my many platforms if the day is right or planned out that way. That kind of planning has led to about five solid months of scenes that I am creating and have scheduled. (She laughs so massively as do I. Content creation that massive with Cherie DeVille is beyond astonishing of a number. Also, what this starlet can create is equivalent to what most studios and expensive shoot teams create for big production companies. So, hearing she has a bag log of scenes and shoots planned and ready to upload. That is mind-blowing.)

Don JuanYou know, I have asked many starlets that question and to many of them, their day is such a chore. There is a flat answer when some of them answer that question. Nu bullshit, it is inspiring to see someone who looks at their day with cheer. People ask me, “Don, why are you so happy all the time?” Because I do love what I am doing. It is fucking cool as hell to see someone else who does too.

Cherie DeVille: Why thank you.

Don JuanSo, going into what a workday consists of with one of the most inspirational people on this planet. I would love to hear, what was it like making Women Seeking Women 171 with Serene Siren behind the camera for Girlfriends Films? That cast is just epic!

Cherie DeVille: Insane! It was the first time that I ever worked with, or even met Lacey. So that was beyond amazing. That was our very, very, very, very first scene together. Serene is amazing. Even though we did not get to bang, I love chatting with her on set. She is simply one of my favorite people no matter the scenario. She is always chill and charming. It was also nice to get to see Reagan and talk with her. She is another person, just so amazing, so chill. She is the person you always want to hang out with on set.

Don Juan: Yes, I love Reagan, she is so amazing.

Cherie DeVille: Yes, I know. Jenna was there as well! Oh, that reminds me. Beforehand, we got to watch Spiegler's epic and it was fun seeing the girls in that film. Then, as the shoot was wrapping, we all flew home together and when we got on the flight, there was like fifteen other pornographers, we all just happened to be on the same flight. There were all the people we saw with other companies like Brazzers, it was crazy! There were so many of us on the flight. I was whispering to Jenna Sativa, “if only we could all shoot some content on this flight, wouldn’t that be nice?” Let’s just say, yes that was a good day.

Cherie DeVille

Don JuanOh, my goodness, that will now be known as the flight from heaven. I used to work in professional wrestling doing the same kind of gig and they have this amazing tale of lore known as the “flight from hell” where all the wrestlers were on the same chartered flight home and what ensued was pure hell. This will now be porn’s contribution to tales of mythology in showbusiness.

Cherie DeVille: Oh, my goodness. A bunch of professional wrestlers. That had to have been a sight and a scene. Now, are we talking a bunch of WWE people?

Don JuanWell, this flight, it was a mixture of a few companies if I remember correctly. It was WCW and WWE. So, there was literally a plane full of drunken, macho, grandiose men all fighting and running around naked on this jumbo jet and what could the crew do in order to calm the situation. That was pre-9/11 days.

Cherie DeVille: Oh, my goodness, that is funny.

Don JuanThat is so cool, now the adult industry has something to add to such wondrous tales of showbusiness with what I will now be calling, “The flight from heaven!”

Cherie DeVille: You are too funny. Seriously, there were so many people that were on that flight it was ridiculous. Let me think about how many people were there. It was the three of us, Demi Sutra, I remember seeing Ricky Johnson and more than a few others.

Don JuanYou know, now that I think about it. You guys all took a picture and posted it on Twitter correct?

Cherie DeVille: Yes, someone was taking pictures, actually a few people were.

Don Juan: After that type of production, that had to be a fun ride home. Plus, it was your first time getting to work with Lacy, who I think truly has a great shot to win Best New Starlet.

Cherie DeVille

Cherie DeVille: This production I think will have so much that fans will enjoy. What I will tell you about Lacy, she was great to work with. I was so impressed with everything she delivered. I mean she was able to memorize her lines in one of the shortest amounts of time I have ever seen. She spoke her lines well, she performed well. She was amazing and passionate. This scene I think is just going to add even more for people to see.

Don JuanYou Cherie, knowing how much you love film, how much you love production, what is Cherie Deville’s greatest piece of work? What is the film that as of this moment defines you as a performer in this amazing industry?

Cherie DeVille: My God, that is a tough one! I do not know if anyone fil does, because, for example. One of my favorite romantic movies I have been in was Unfolded. When it comes to my acting ability the methods that I use to create chemistry is something different from that film and then when it comes to my favorite gonzo scene and film, where I do something crazy, acrobatic and athletic that is something different.

If it is Girl/Girl, my goodness, there is a lot out there to think about. Then we go to my “Mommy” movies. I honestly do not think just one film can encapsulate the variety of work that I have been doing since my career started. I wish that there was one movie that had it all. I do not even think that some of my showcases give off everything that is me in one film. The production with Evil, the showcase with Elegant Angel, it is so hard to pick one that gives it all. I think it depends on so many things. I do not think that one particular film is better than the other due to so many different and wonderful variables.

Don JuanOh, I got ya. So, this can also mean that we have yet to see the most massive Cherie DeVille film that has ever been made? My goodness, that is something to look forward to. So, the defining picture, we have yet to see!

Cherie DeVille: Maybe, right? To be honest, I think that to really see who I am as a performer and all those things I mentioned, I think that you have to go to a multitude of films. There is just so that I think defines me when it comes to my film work.

Don JuanOh yes. You know this year was so massive with big films. Seeing all these massive acting films, like Perspective, like what Serene is doing with Girlfriends Films and Fit Chick Clique. There is so much wonder in many forms all wrapped up into one. Perhaps this is where we see 2020 become a true pillar of the career of Cherie DeVille? This leads us into the next question being that you are so good with the camera, it is almost as if you were born with the camera extension right there with you. Cherie always knows where that camera is!

Cherie DeVille

Cherie DeVille:

(We both laugh so cool and casually. Cherie is known among people who have shot with large scale equipment to always know where the camera is so that she is not looking into it. Making that element of fantasy go that much deeper. An actor on this level is special in any industry, so getting her to speak on this was a must.)

Believe it or not, I was not in the beginning. I will tell you a little story. So, it was my fourth or fifth boy-girl scene. I was shooting a threesome with Aaliyah Love and Danny Mountain. It was Aaliyah Love’s first threesome ever. In real life, or on camera. So, we are both going into this scene not knowing what is ahead but really excited about everything. So, we are all a mess. We are making out off-camera; we are doing all of the things that you are not supposed to do when you are shooting. We are this, we are that, whatever we were thinking, this is going to be an awesome day. So now we are shooting, everything is wonderful and he cums in her pussy. I then slurp it up and I think that it is looking good for the camera. Then, the production team says, “Now show it?” I am thinking to myself, what do you mean show it? I said, “You just saw me down there and I slurped everything up?” Ohhhh, I was in so much trouble.

(We are both snickering and giggling. This is a true insight into something I do not think fans or critics ever know about an adult film.) I am thinking once again to myself, there was cum on the pussy, I was down there. Oh no, no, no, no was what I was being brought back into the moment with. We had to get that shot twice and was in so much trouble.

Don Juan: Oh no! (You never hear stories like these fans. Not shared by superstars or any starlet for that matter. It is apart of learning the ropes and honestly, you see performers who excel like Cherie and you do not think such a thing would happen with Cherie DeVille.)

Cherie DeVille: There is definitely a learning curve with everything when it comes to making a film, no matter what it is you are creating. There was one for me believe it or not. There was a time I did not know the things I did about where the camera is. There are many a performer must learn, and some lessons are harder to learn than others. (We laugh like jackals here, for that is the true campfire stories of this business that no one knows.) It is something I can laugh at now but that day, I think that I cried.

Don JuanOh, my goodness, I can imagine. I would have too!

Cherie DeVille: All I could keep thinking was, “I was just so excited.”

Don JuanMy goodness, what a roller coaster ride of the senses that day had to be. That is amazing that you mentioned Aaliyah. I think that woman is the bee’s knees, I have not gotten to talk to her in years. I have always wanted to know…..

Cherie DeVille: I took her to Thailand on our last “Girl-Cation”

Don Juan: Yay! Fucking cool! How did you guys first meet and become friends?

Cherie DeVille: On set with Girlfriends Films.

Don Juan: You know, to get mushy on you both. You guys are the definition of friendship. I wish fans could just see you both tweet to one another. Your friendship, warmth, and love are so amazing. Too me, it summarizes what is the most beautiful thing about this business. Meeting like-minded people who show you things about life, the world and yourself you always knew to be true with this type of loving honesty that I have only ever seen in this business.

Cherie DeVille and Aaliyah Love

Chere DeVille: Awwwwww, yes, we always have a great fucking time. Yep, we met on set and we have been two little peas in a pod ever since.

Don JuanSo, you met on a Girlfriends Films set, so are we talking on one of Dan O’Connell’s sets?

Cherie DeVille: Yes, Dan was definitely directing. I believe it was 2010 or 2011. I remember showing up to the shoot house and from the moment that we started talking, we were just best friends.

Don JuanOK darlin’ last two questions. What does sexuality mean to Cherie DeVille?

Cherie DeVille: I feel like that is such a beautiful question because sexuality can mean anything.

It is something this is A-Sexual or not. I respect people who are A-Sexual just as much as people who are not. For me, I think sexuality is how we enjoy erotic pleasures.

So that could be with one group of people, it could be with a certain sex, or with yourself, if you are in a relationship or not. You know people should always know that sexuality can be so many things that you can think of when it comes to being sexually aroused consensually and happily. So yes, sexuality to me is any way that you can experience sexual arousal.

Don JuanYou are gangsta woman, I love it! So, here is the grand finale and once again, I can not wait to hear your answer. Cherie DeVille, …. She is a woman who learned dancing in the most amazing way while in Tennessee, she went to school for many years to work in one field she loves, only to discover another along her many travels. She is a Performer of the Year, she is a gamer, she is a friend and inspiration to so many who have hosted red carpets, who has created the most amazing comedy skits on YouTube, tell me something that I do not know about Cherie DeVille?

Cherie DeVille: Oh, well, I do not know what Don Juan knows and what doesn’t so, I am going to throw this one at you, did you know that I have three dogs and a cat?

Don JuanNoblest fucking answer ever and no, I did not. Tell me about your “fur babies” that is what I call my little “bobbleheads.” (We share a final joyful laugh that you only get from another animal lover.)

Cherie DeVille: One of them is rescued, my skinny cat, I have one of my dogs is a Chihuahua that I found in a parking lot, one I found in Mexico. There is one dog that I did purchase that is my Whippet. I have had that beauty for sixteen years now.

With that, I could think of no better way to end the interview with a woman who will go down not only as one of the most successful adult entertainers of all time but also one of the most inspirational. When you see a performer who can create smiles with her friends like Dani Daniels and Aaliyah Love in ways that go past what most define as friendship, love, togetherness, and compassion, you see she is a true part of a modern revolution not just within the adult film industry but secretly within all our modern society. In a world that is dominated by headlines of betrayal, hate, and controversy it is a person like Cherie DeVille who is championing where we can truly go when we open our minds and our lives to our own sexuality. Cherie does not get the headlines that most performers do in this department. As any superstar will tell you, their days are long, tedious and there are never enough hours in the day. This starlet opened up many doors for many things in this business that are not said right at this moment, but they will be in the years to come. As we head into an awards season where she has a massive chance to make history once again, I think 2020 will begin a look at what the adult entertainers of the world are really capable of and as she showed me many years ago, there is are moments in life where a simple hello, a smile and a hug can move mountains and save the day as she does in her many beloved video games with heroes of fiction. This hero, I found out, she is flesh and blood and a real as happiness gets in the world.
