So, what should we consider before engaging in public displays of affection?

• Respecting traditions: Certain cultures have deeply ingrained traditions regarding public displays of intimacy. Even holding hands or a quick peck in these settings might be viewed as disrespectful or offensive. Ignoring these cultural norms can be seen as a lack of respect and understanding towards the local way of life.
• Religious beliefs: Some religions have specific guidelines regarding physical contact outside of marriage, and public displays of affection might contradict these guidelines. Being mindful of the dominant religious beliefs in a particular environment is crucial to avoid causing any offense. For example, it is 100% inappropriate for a woman and a man to touch according to the Islamic culture. Even shaking hands is unacceptable between a man and a woman if they're not related.
• Professionalism: Workplaces and learning institutions often prioritize professionalism and maintain a specific decorum. Engaging in PDA in these settings can be seen as unprofessional and disruptive to the overall environment. Of course, this doesn't apply in certain settings like the adult industry.
• Respecting the space: Formal settings like courtrooms, houses of worship, and government buildings often demand a sense of seriousness and respect. Excessively passionate or overly intimate PDA can be seen as disrespectful to the sanctity of the space and its purpose.

Unfortunately, as a queer woman married to another woman, I've learned and accepted that it's better to be mindful and considerate of differing opinions around families. I prefer waiting a bit to kiss my wife than having to engage in a discussion rooted in ignorance.
• Crowded places: Public transportation, busy sidewalks, or overcrowded streets could be better locations for PDA. These settings require consideration for others navigating their way through the space, and excessive displays of affection can hinder the flow and comfort of others.
• Excessive displays: While a quick kiss might be acceptable in a casual setting, prolonged and passionate affection displays can make others uncomfortable, especially if the surrounding environment doesn't facilitate privacy. Don't lie to yourself, dear reader... we all know when we cross that boundary between affection and PG-13 sex.
• Inappropriate gestures: Certain gestures, even in casual settings, might be considered overly intrusive or offensive in public, regardless of cultural norms. For example, spanking.

Ultimately, the individuals involved should always feel comfortable with the level of physical intimacy they choose to express publicly.
