Women Content Creators Just Wanna Make Female POV Porn

EDITORIAL FEATURES

It’s a Story with All Kinds of Sex Seen from the Woman’s Point of View.

“That's about the size...
where you put your eyes...
That's about the size of it."

America’s dirty secret is that women enjoy watching porn. Porn’s dirty not-so-secret is that it makes less porn from a woman’s point of view or with her “eye” in mind. This, in addition to societal pressures, further discourages women from enjoying what they watch. Thanks to a slowly growing number of content innovators, videos available for women, coupled, trans, and non-binary fans of sexually explicit Female-Point-of-View (FPOV) movies have an ever-increasing and improving supply to choose from.

Proportion of Female Visitors

2022 saw the proportion of female viewers grow to 36%, an increase of +1 percentage point and +4% growth compared to 2021.

Although the number of women openly consuming online pornography is still less than that of men, in 2022, PornHub reported that 36-percent of its traffic came from women. Yet, even with these rising numbers, the vast majority of porn is shot with male viewers in mind. In the case of POV movies, it is shot quite literally from the man’s perspective and point-of-view. This is great if the goal is to watch a pretty girl work up a lather on a guy’s penis or to gaze deep into her asshole as it’s being fucked while the camera looks through the “eyes” of the guy in question.

Some female porn viewers enjoy male POV content. They also enjoy hardcore male-on-male sex and masturbation, as well as BDSM, transmasculine, and other explicit images of people and activities that are not part of their daily reality. Porn is, after all, about fantasy. The possibility to view physical intimacy with one or more sexy someone else while the camera looks through the “eyes” of the woman has its obvious appeal. It’s possible that many women who feel negatively about porn after viewing it might have come away with a different opinion had it been shot from a female POV.

With the misconception that women “aren’t visual” rampant both in and out of the adult industry, little attempt has been made to craft erotic content with their preferences in mind. Among the common missteps in what has come before is the lack of variation in the appearance of male talent. A hard body is certainly lovely to gaze upon and watch in action but not every woman wants to fantasize about having one run rampant over her naked body. Lanky men, chubby men, goth men, boho men; they all have their admirers and a valid place in the growing niche of “porn for women.”

Gender:

  • 83.3% of VR porn users are men.

Feminist erotica director Erika Lust, who owns Lust Cinema,  told Vice that her experience with women viewers has led her to understand that they crave a greater sense of emotional connection along with their physical arousal. With the rise of VR porn and its associated hardware costs, Lust contends that content aimed at female and other non-male viewers would benefit from better communication between performers, increased images of mutual pleasure, and more realistic scenarios. To improve the chances of these things happening, she proposes that more women be hired to participate in the creative process, such as within development and production.

Both European and domestic companies historically dedicated to male customers and those created specifically to do erotic outreach to female viewers have entered the market over the years. A survey by Bedbible.com revealed that approximately 17 percent of VR porn viewers are women, although the number may be higher due to shared accounts and equipment. While the number of female subscribers is still low, a 2020 study published in The Archives of Sexual Behavior found that the 38 participants involved were more turned on by well-produced VR porn than by comparable 2D porn. They also reported feeling more sexually involved with the scene.

An example is Lust’s one VR production, 360 Degrees of Lust. Starring Jason Carrera and Mickey Mod, two popular male performers, joined another three men for a gangbang with their female star’s pleasure in mind. Lust admits that the release was popular, but not as much as more traditionally devised scenes.

Outside of the USA, Spain-based company VR Life launched Virtual Real Passion in 2016 as part of its mission to gender equality. It bills itself as the “world’s first VR porn site for women” and includes FPOV on its menu, inspired by the suggestions for porn themes affixed to its 2018 “wishing tree” at a convention. According to information shared with Vice, VRP draws from its female staff for ideas, including the FPOV M-F-M threesome scene My Boyfriends Are Back and Unstuck, where viewers find themselves accidentally on the receiving end of their roommate’s quarterback boyfriend.

Other online entities helping to stoke the fires of women’s loins include Yanks VR and immerSex/Sex Like Real. The former, with experienced queer director of lesbian FPOV content Fivestar behind the camera, aims to capture genuine orgasms, sometimes starring real world women-only and non-binary couples and singles. Although Fivestar’s LezVR, launched in 2016, did not thrive, her collaborations with Todd Spaits of Yanks VR have been more successful in breaking what he calls “the fourth wall emotionally.” When the video magic really works, he pointed out to Vice, “you can get a little chill from… a model leaning into the camera, getting really close to your neck.”

ImmerSex, on the other hand, is a more recently opened wing of Vroomed studio. Initially disinterested in FPOV, once founder Miron’s girlfriend showed interest in the idea he overrode the no vote of his business partner and released two titles. Truck Driver Skills and All for a Woman’s Pleasure did not bring the big numbers he had hoped for, so he added genital close-up videos to the inventory to balance things out. By comparison, the lesbian FPOV release, A Tale of Storm and Fire, became the most sought after of the website’s genre titles.

In traditional “male gaze” scenes, pillow princesses are not a feature. But when the focus of the action is arousal through a woman’s eyes, it’s not just all right to lay back and revel in the pleasure of cunnilingus, vibrators, fingers, and whatever makes her feel good, it’s the whole point.
