Revenge Porn Finally Getting Some Attention From the Authorities

Yesterday I read that California has sent its first person to jail for posting nude photos of his ex-girlfriend on her employers website. I have to say that this comes as a relief to me. I can exhale fully again. I know, sounds dramatic right? But after a slew of celebrity account hacking, normal people snapchat hacking and more, I think we needed a win. Something to give a sign that ‘these people’ don’t always win. Sure, Noe Iniguez (the man found guilty of revenge porn) wasn’t the guy who hacked Jennifer Lawrence's account but hopefully we start here and then move on to take bigger, badder things more seriously.

Hopefully this will make people who decide to create websites so people can post revenge porn, stop and well, not. Hopefully this will make every man and woman who thinks the best way to get back at a person is to post a private nekkid photo think twice. Hopefully we will be able to move on to taking hacked photos more seriously.

I’ve always thought people who participated in revenge porn to be the most petty form of human plebeian. I mean sure you got dumped or broke up or whatever, deal with it and move on. Why the need to post naked photos of people? It’s even worse when women do it to other women. 

This gets me thinking about two things, one we clearly need a better way to deal with our emotions, and two, perhaps if sexuality, the human form and sex weren’t such shameful things we wouldn’t feel the need to do shit like this. Then again, we might be the most open species in the world, that still doesn’t mean that people can post photos/videos of us without our consent.

So we’re here now, in this delicate space where how we proceed can either make it or break it for a lot of people. A lot of people (women especially) are looking to the justice system with hope in their eyes. Will we be able to once again take nekkid selfies (because why the hell not?) knowing that if these photos get out due to erratic ex-boyfriends/girlfriends or some bored hacker the law will be on our side to take some serious action?

Sure the law might need some tinkering; some groups are already pushing back claiming the law is too wide that it “criminalizes artists, historians, booksellers and others who may publish nude images for reasons other than revenge.” For example the Pulitzer Prize winning photo “Napalm girl” who is shown running naked after being severely burned was cited as something that would fall under this law.

Yes sure, we don’t want legitimate works of art or history to get affected, but I’m pretty sure that including them would also open the door to many people posting revenge porn photos to claim that it is art. I’m sure some lawyer somewhere (or many lawyers everywhere) will find a loophole that will get their client off the hook. I don’t want to comment too much on this because I’m not a lawyer. But my sincere hope is that something will be resolved soon that will come down hard on those posting revenge porn photos and hacking, but will leave out those who aren’t participating in this vile act.

Pipe dream? I hope not. I sure would like to start sexting again soon!
