So… this landed in my inbox today. Excuse me while I tuck my inner prude away. BRB...

Alright then, where were we? Ah yes, ManServant. So apparently you can now rent a (hot) man to do your bidding for the affordable $125 an hour. I was unsure about this whole concept for a bit because the idea of having a man serve me like the queen I am rests in the darkest recesses of my fantasies. And also, when I ask for something, and the person replies, “As you wish,” it only sounds sarcastic to me and that’s probably not what they were going for.

But this service is real ladies - albeit only in San Francisco - and according to it’s website, it launches this month. The idea came about when co-founders Josephine Wai Lin and Dalal Khajah realized that the male-stripper is a hand-me-down fantasy. The more I think about that statement, the more I realise it’s true. I’m almost never turned on by a male stripper - and none of my girlfriends are either. Instead, a male stripper is a fun little party prop. One that makes you feel a little uncomfortable because you are forced to produce fake sexuality with a lot of “Whoooo!! YEAHH!!!” lest you be deemed un-sexual (the horror!!). It’s also really funny to watch a man ‘be’ sexy with a lot of hip thrusting (never once has this sentence, “Oh god, look at those hips… I’m so turned on,” been a prelude to any sexual act).

And the more I think about having a hot man serve me, be gracious and charming, pamper me, be my bodyguard, not judge me if I need to take copious amounts of selfies - in fact take them for me, the more I come around to the idea that yes, this is much better. The more I wish that I lived in San Francisco so I could hire these men.

This service is offering a fantasy and not just some imagined fantasy of what men think women want, but the reality of what women (or some women) want. Sure this isn’t for everyone, because this isn’t the fantasy of every woman. Just like a woman in a skanky nurse outfit isn’t the fantasy of every man (it isn’t right?).

This isn’t about objectifying the man - I know it looks like it could be. But look below the cheeky video advertising the service. For one, this service is strictly non-sexual. Just read the code of conduct on the ManServant website:

The thing is, given that there is no sex involved, it seems that the protest about this service comes from the fact that is seems ‘beneath’ a man or objectifying for a man to be hired to serve a woman, to dote on her, to treat her like a queen. As if a butlers job is beneath a regular man. I believe the name of the service is what seems to be ruffling feathers. Perhaps if it were called, ButlerService, no one would bat an eye?

Personally, I feel that if all parties are happy to be there, then by all means, who are we to judge how people choose to spend their money (or make their money, legally) to fulfill their fantasies? If paying for it is the only way women can get the royal treatment, then by all means I for one am ready to dish out some dough!
