Sex Tourism: Where To Start

EDITORIAL FEATURES

“I’ve got hoes, I’ve got hoes in different area, area codes… I bang cock in Bangkok. Can’t stop, I turn and hit the same spot, think I’m the Thrilla in Manila, schlong in Hong Kong..”

Sound familiar? This is Ludacris’ Area Codes and it’s the first thing that came to my mind when I thought “...traveling for sex is a thing and I’ve been missing out.”

I have been VERY lucky and able to travel a lot in the last decade. Honestly, now I’m very disappointed at the fact that SEX tourism hadn’t crossed my mind until I started researching kinks in different countries. Yes, with the help of dating apps, casual sex, threesomes and, random kinky evenings are always literally a few legal clicks away.

But that’s not really sex tourism as much as sex-as-a-tourist.

However, how many countries have you fucked in so far? Do you need more than one hand to count? Hopefully, both aren’t enough!

People know certain cities are special for a particular kink (or two, or more than a few) and people are willing to travel to indulge in them. Not surprisingly (and according to Wikipedia), sex tourism is a multi-billion dollar industry that globally supports a workforce estimated in the millions, directly benefiting service industries such as the airline, taxi, restaurant, and hotel industries.

These are a few (in no specific order):

    1. Thailand: Prostitution is illegal but laws are ambiguous and more frequently than not, not enforced. The available statistics vary but there are between 250,000 and 2 million sex workers in Thailand. Because prostitution was legal up to the 1960s, there’s a history and cultural acceptance of sex work. If Go-Go bars or “kathoey” (or “ladyboys”) are your things, Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya should be the next cities on your travel list. Pattaya is even known as the world’s sex capital and it’s safe to say it’s paradise for both sex workers and sex tourists.

    2. Japan: UGH! THE REGRETS I HAVE ARE TOO MANY FOR ME TO IGNORE. I definitely missed out on a side of Japan you don’t really see unless you’re looking for it. We’re talking about a sex culture and techniques that have been perfected in the past thousand years, not to mention the never-ending list of kinks you’ll be able to explore.

    3. Netherlands: Amsterdam is probably one of the first three places that will come to mind when you think about sex tourism. Amsterdam prides itself on being liberal and tolerant. Prostitution is legal and the government ensures that all prostitutes have access to medical care and work in better conditions by regulating and monitoring working practices and standards. Besides the “window prostitutes” that give the Red Light District its name, there are “coffee shops”, sex shops, peep shows, strip clubs, sex theaters, the Museum of Prostitution, and the Museum of Eroticism to keep you hard and busy.

    4. Spain: I lived in Barcelona for four years and I was surprised to find it listed in many online blogs about sex tourism. I lived in el Raval for two years which is apparently the “red light district” in the city. Yes, there were a few prostitutes who were always around at night but I guess that means you should do some research before you go and make sure you find what you’re looking for. The lax legislation and guaranteed health care do make it a great place for both sex workers and sex tourists.
    5. Dominican Republic, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico Prostitution is legal and what’s not to like about beautiful beaches, beautiful women, and delicious food?
    6. Senegal: Senegal is the only African country where sex work is both legalized and regulated. There’s many luxury hotels and resorts on the beach where you can find both male and female sex seekers. It’s the only place I found listed that mentions women traveling for sex with local men. Apparently, you can find young, muscular men playing football and flexing their muscles waiting for the right client. I also read that “meeting with young Aboriginals is not a problem irrespective of your age” and to each their own, but I can’t avoid cringing at that sentence.

Sex tourism isn’t necessarily black and white in terms of legality. Always inform yourself because there are places where the sex worker might be breaking the law and sometimes it’s the client- YOU. SEX TOURISM CAN BE EXPLOITATIVE AND CREATES A MARKET FOR HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND SLAVERY. This is not what I wrote about today but I acknowledge and feel the need to clarify that I only included countries where prostitution is legal but, because it’s become easier to travel, sex tourism is becoming increasingly popular everywhere.

One thing I’ve learned while traveling is that US dollars (and other strong currencies) give us a sort of power and responsibility in the world. We can make a huge difference in someone’s life for less than what we would pay for a week of groceries. Many sex workers don’t have many options but have great responsibilities. Many are trying to provide food and education to the next generation BUT many are victims of an industry that profits from human trafficking and slavery. Think about who you’re giving your money to and what you’re doing with your power when you pay for sex.

The places on this list are incredible and worth visiting regardless of whether you’re traveling for sex. The natural beauty of these exotic countries is more than enough to warrant them being on your travel list. That said, if you’re looking to have some erotic fun but have little red-light-district experience, these places are a great place to start. The fact that the industry is regulated to a certain degree means that you should be careful and mindful (like you should always be when you travel) but feel safe relaxing and having a great time.
