Hey there Fleshbot fans--- Today, May 6, is International No Diet Day. Founded in 1992 by Mary Evans Young, the holiday “celebrates the importance of body acceptance, diversity, and respect for all body shapes and sizes” and seeks to end diet culture and promote a healthy relationship with food and body size for all genders of people. I could rant a ton about diet culture, but I’m summarizing: Human life is short already and diets waste a lot of time and energy. Eat what makes your body feel good. Move your body because it’s fun. The only food you should feel guilty about eating is the food you stole from someone. Okay, Chick-Fil-A too. But only because they suck as a company.

I feel that times are changing and body diversity is a bit better and more accepted lately. Fat representation in mainstream media is gradually improving. But size acceptance goes a bit deeper than saying “Slay, Queen!” when, for example, Lizzo does something awesome or sending up a cheer when Jenny Craig goes out of business. It’s deprogramming ourselves when we interact with fat folks--- I guarantee you, that fat person eating a cheeseburger at a restaurant does not want to hear from you, a stranger, about how they should be having a salad and no one at the gym wants your unsolicited pep talk, no matter how well-intentioned. We as a society also need to vastly improve in terms of intersectionality, recognizing that race, gender, ability, genetics and economic circumstances all contribute to a person’s health, and weight is not always the best indicator of overall health. Ask a thin person who lives on coffee, alcohol, cigarettes, and fast food whether they've ever been called a "drain on society" or told they are "glorifying an unhealthy lifestyle." I'd wager not.

Organizations such as NAAFA and NOLOSE are also great starting points for fat activism but sometimes the best activism is being fat and enjoying life and your friends, family, and lovers, busting down the toxic narrative that all of us fatties are loners crying in our donuts all the time. Fuck The Whale entirely, by the way. Fat joy is fucking subversive!

In terms of porn and fat folks, offerings over the years have been a mixed bag.
