Flesh It Out: Songs In The Key Of Smut — Summer Solstice Sexy Witchy Edition

EDITORIAL FEATURES

Warm nights, bonfires, and mead? Totally great setup for a fun witchy hookup!

Happy Summer Solstice (or Winter Solstice for y’all in the Southern Hemisphere!), Fleshbot fans! While Beltane on May 1 is the biggest sex holiday for us Pagans, the Summer Solstice or Litha is pretty up there as far as party holidays. It’s a fire and solar themed holiday so lots of passion is in the air not to mention sometimes a little otherworldly mischief --- The Bard was not talking out of his ass when he wrote A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Summer Solstice festivals are usually outdoors, involve bonfires, warm nights, fireflies, tree frog chorus, and it’s hot, so very little clothing sometimes. Lest we think Northern Hemisphere witches have all the fun, I think Southern Hemisphere witches definitely enjoy some shenanigans under all those blankets around the indoor or outdoor fire. It’s traditional for Winter Solstice to stay up all night and greet the dawn and what’s a better way to pass those hours, am I right?

Pagan rock star SJ Tucker brings us, well, a banger, in several senses of the word with her song “Hymn To Herne” (2008) which tells us of the Horned God, specifically referencing Herne of course, but also the Horned God Big Dick Energy ™ as a whole. Literally one of the lyrics is “If the solstice time gets your panties in a wad/ it’s just the coming of the Horned God.” I mean, if you were wearing panties to begin with, that is….

The song “Gently Johnny” appears in an iconic scene in the classic folk horror film The Wicker Man (1973), but I love this version released in 2003 by UK Pagan musician Damh The Bard. It’s sultry and sexy and has a great little monologue bit in the middle and I defy to think this doesn’t belong in your sexy time playlist.

“Caravan”  (2000) by Suzanne Sterling is an evocative atmospheric piece that gives you the feeling that you’re in some sort of exotic land surrounded by belly dancers and drummers and clouds of fragrant incense and the lyrics are actually quite spicy if you listen closely and I’ve even used a quote from this song in one of my erotica stories. Most of her music is quite different and not as lusty but still awesome!

Gothy British Pagan band Inkubus Sukkubus definitely has released a lot of songs that are sexual in nature about witches, vampires, and other such subjects, but they also sing about the Great God Pan, who I venerate, among other spirits. He’s associated with lust, madness, masturbation, and magic mushrooms among many other things. One of my favorite Pan songs of theirs is “The Goat” (2011). Should you meet this fella in the woods, it’s probably going to be a good time.

Florence Welch of Florence And The Machine has always struck me as more than a little witchy with her ethereal style reminiscent of Kate Bush and Stevie Nicks. “Drumming Song” (2009) is a great choice for this playlist. It’s been a song for several people for me over the years and speaks to the madness that lust and love can put you through. It’s also got a little Ophelia vibe to it, so don’t drown yourself over someone, mkay? They aren’t worth it!
