Fans of AI porn generation aren’t going to be happy today to hear this news.
Popular AI content generation platform Civitai.com has announced sweeping policy changes in response to increasing pressure from payment processors and regulatory scrutiny—a familiar challenge for adult industry platforms.
In a comprehensive statement released this week, the site outlined updates to its Terms of Service (ToS), moderation pipeline, and visibility rules, particularly affecting users who generate or view NSFW content.
The revisions aim to bring the platform into compliance with evolving standards around online safety, legality, and monetization, echoing longstanding restrictions seen on platforms like OnlyFans.
Key Policy Changes:
- Explicit Content Bans: New restrictions now prohibit content depicting incest, self-harm (including eating disorders), diapers, and various bodily excretions such as urine and menstruation. Content promoting hate, violence, or extremist ideologies is also banned.
- Metadata Requirement for NSFW Content: All X and XXX-rated uploads must now include generation metadata, such as the prompt used to create the image. Older NSFW content without metadata will be hidden until updated, and ultimately removed after a 30-day grace period if left non-compliant.
- Content Filtering Enhancements: Content depicting real people or minors, as well as imagery involving celebrity likenesses in mature contexts, will be systematically filtered out of public feeds. New rules also prohibit any NSFW depictions involving mind-altered states, including intoxication or hypnosis.
- Monetization Restrictions: Images meant to replicate the likeness of real people will no longer be eligible for ads, tips (Buzz), or early access features—an effort to prevent unauthorized commercial use of identifiable individuals.
- Moderation Pipeline Upgrade: Civitai has partnered with Clavata, a cutting-edge image analysis firm, to improve accuracy in content rating. This replaces older moderation tools, which were criticized for inconsistent performance.
- Legal Disclosures: The platform has introduced a 2257 Compliance Statement affirming the exclusion of non-AI content, along with a Content Removal Request page allowing non-logged-in users to report violations or likeness misuse.
Civitai attributed the changes to increasing external scrutiny and challenges with major financial services providers like Visa and Mastercard—an issue long familiar in the adult industry. In a statement, the platform explained:
“These changes are about keeping the lights on and protecting the future of the platform.”
The update represents a significant tightening of acceptable content boundaries, particularly for creators working with adult-themed generative art. Creators are advised to review existing content, download anything they wish to preserve, and update metadata to avoid removal after the 30-day enforcement window.
The company emphasized its commitment to transparency and community continuity, even as it adjusts operations to ensure long-term viability.
