Avery Black has launched a fundraiser to support her close friend and fellow performer, Scarlett Alexis, who has been diagnosed with a rare breast condition named Phyllodes.
Phyllodes tumors (sometimes referred to as cystosarcoma phyllodes) are rare breast tumors that, unlike more common types of breast cancer, originate from the connective tissue (or stroma) of the breast, rather than the milk ducts or lobules.
Here are some key points about phyllodes tumors:
- Rarity: Phyllodes tumors are quite rare, accounting for less than 1% of all breast tumors.
- Benign and Malignant: Phyllodes tumors can be benign (non-cancerous), borderline (with features between benign and malignant), or malignant (cancerous). Most phyllodes tumors are benign, but some can be malignant and spread to other parts of the body.
- Symptoms: These tumors often present as a palpable lump in the breast, which might grow rapidly. They might not always be detected through mammograms, making clinical examination crucial.
- Treatment: The main treatment for phyllodes tumors is surgery. Unlike many other types of breast tumors, chemotherapy and radiation are less commonly used unless the tumor is malignant and has spread to other parts of the body.
- Recurrence: Even after surgical removal, there’s a chance that phyllodes tumors can recur. The risk of recurrence varies depending on whether the tumor is benign, borderline, or malignant. For this reason, close follow-up is necessary after treatment.
- Differentiation from Fibroadenomas: Phyllodes tumors can sometimes be mistaken for fibroadenomas, which are benign breast lumps. However, phyllodes tend to grow more rapidly and can become quite large.
Scarlett is scheduled to undergo a crucial lumpectomy in November to remove three tumors. This surgery is not only imperative but urgent, as these specific tumors have the potential to turn cancerous if left untreated. The procedure, unfortunately, carries a hefty price tag. Beyond the surgical costs, Scarlett also faces the financial burden of living expenses during the period she will need to recuperate, preventing her from working.
Scarlett Alexis has touched many lives with her generosity, kindness, and unwavering spirit. Those fortunate to have met her can attest to her profound impact, leaving lasting imprints on their hearts. The diagnosis has cast a shadow over Scarlett’s radiant positivity, and this initiative aims to restore hope and alleviate some of the financial stresses she’s currently confronting.
Avery Black, close friend and initiator of the fundraiser, shared, “Scarlett has always been a beacon of light, kindness, and generosity in our community. This challenge she’s facing has been tough, but with our collective support, we can help keep her signature beautiful smile shining through this trying time.”
The public is warmly invited to contribute to Scarlett’s GoFundMe campaign. Any amount, no matter how big or small, will make a significant difference in her journey to recovery.
