Jenna Jameson diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome

NEWS & PRESS

As we posted yesterday, Jenna Jameson has been struggling with health issues but has finally received a diagnosis, which is Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Jenna Jameson had been throwing up for two weeks before going to the hospital last week, only to be sent home. She returned home after just two days she lost her ability to walk and had to return to the hospital for further testing. This is where they found she was suffering from a rare autoimmune disorder.

According to the CDC, it’s a disorder in which a person’s own immune system damages the nerves, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. The symptoms can last from weeks to several years. Most fully recover but some have permanent nerve damage.

The exact cause of Guillain-Barre syndrome isn’t known. The disorder usually appears days or weeks after a respiratory or digestive tract infection. Rarely, recent surgery or vaccination can trigger Guillain-Barre syndrome. Recently, there have been cases reported following infection with the Zika virus.

A recent study in the UK from the National Center for Biotechnology Information revealed its COVID connection.

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a rare manifestation of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection; whereas the common neurological manifestations of the SARS-CoV-2 infection occur with the onset of the respiratory symptoms and may be due to the direct invasion of the nervous system by the virus, GBS in COVID-19 follows a time lag of 1-4 weeks and may be attributable to the immune mechanism of molecular mimicry. Here we report a case of GBS in a patient of COVID-19 which occurred on the 22nd day after the onset of the disease. The patient recovered completely and went home walking.

She has recently traveled including a trip to Fiji so it is possible she picked something up while on holiday. She hasn’t however revealed how she thinks she got sick.

Among adults recovering from Guillain-Barre syndrome: About 80% can walk independently six months after diagnosis. About 60% fully recover motor strength one year after diagnosis. About 5% to 10% have very delayed and incomplete recovery.

On her Instagram account, her husband said that she was being given a high dose of immunoglobulin therapy.

“She’s doing physical therapy to try and stand on her legs, but at the moment she cannot stand on her legs. They’re starting the treatment so they’ll see how it goes. So keep praying.”

We’ll post more updates as they become available. In the meantime, you can follow Jenna Jameson on Instagram at @jennacantlose.
