Audio/Video Quality: The 3 Way was presented in a 1.78:1 ratio anamorphic widescreen color it was shot in by director David Stanley for Vivid Entertainmentusing the standard definition MPEG-2 codec in 480 resolution for this DVD. The flick was shot in 1080i/60 high definition last year, though presented in the SD format in a short vignette format. The lighting was well handled and this added to the pleasure of watching the gals in play as the lengthy scenes gave them enough freedom to explore their sexuality. The composition of the camera angles was almost always optimal this time, camera operators B. Skow and Shylar Cobi seeing fit to try and enhance the look of the ladies at every turn, T-Bird Meadows handling the editing this time. The fleshtones were usually accurate too and the DVD mastering was well done (the bitrate hovering around 3.7 Mbps), even if the lighting was off at times (the company watermark will be bothersome to some out there but only some given its location). The audio was presented in a 2.0 Dolby Digital English (in 256 Kbps with a 48 kHz sampling rate) offering with the vocals sounding flat and the music pretty decent. The aural qualities of the movie appeared to offer very limited separation and dynamic range, the vocals easily heard in most cases and mixed in with the ambient noises fairly well but I liked the theme song that invoked memories of “To Sir With Love” by Lulu.

Body of Review: David Stanley was long established as a director with a lot of wild ideas, his works under contract at a couple of companies winning awards and nominations with regularity. Recently, David came back to Vivid Entertainment to assist their lead director on a project or two, now given a chance to craft his own comeback flick called The 3 Way. The movie was a relationship feature where Skin Diamond and Asphyxia Noir endure some friction before coming to an arrangement with a drifter played by Xander Corvus; the man a fixture in their past. As most porn features released these days are parodies, I was interested in seeing what David came up with his return to the big chair. I found the movie to be well shot (he had some great staffers helping out) and well worth picking up, the sexual trysts not as lengthy as I prefer but usually added in nicely to the plotted elements. The back cover described the movie like this: “Jules and Ann are young married lesbians who run a successful tattoo shop in LA. Their two-year marriage is showing some strain. Ann loves Jules and Jules loves Ann, but there's something missing, at least for Jules. One day, Jim (Xander), Ann's step-brother by marriage, comes back to California and to Ann's life, after disappearing in New York and Paris for a few years. Ann's history with Jim is complicated. Almost-sex-as-teens complicated... Ann sublimates her feelings for Jim by focusing on Jules. While Jules wonders what wonders might exist on the other side...of Jim's zipper for instance. Can Ann and Jules survive a most dangerous liaison? Will Jim provide sexual healing for Ann and for Jules? Let's just say there are three sides to every story, and it's never been more true than now...” Here’s a brief look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that no condoms were used for those still interested:

She was masturbating in bed when he overheard her, leading to the kind of sexual tension build up you rarely see in a fuck flick (breaking up the minor clips into her climbing into his bed to slob his knob aggressively). She was on top most of the time and not overly active at riding but she sure looked good getting tapped, the tension continuing to build throughout the scene as he fingered her ass but never went further. The elevated chemistry was great and it ended with a facial of population pudding landing all over her face, the feature elements culminating in the confrontation ever quicker due to the identity confusion she had over what she really wanted.

Scene Four: Skin Diamond, the sexy and exotic babe featured on the right side of the front cover, was up next in a revenge fuck of sorts with moper Tommy Pistol in the tattoo shop. She practically jumped his bones and slobbed his knob with passion over her hurt feelings. He then ate her and they fucked, first vaginally and then anally, her screams of pleasure showing perhaps she was not as committed to her life partner as she believed either. Skin was very solid at riding actively and conveyed her pleasure easily, Tommy beating off a healthy wad of splooge to her face and mouth before she ran out.

Scene Five: Asphyxia Noir, Skin Diamond, and Xander Corvus, were up last as they came to terms with their feelings and emotions, Skin making the reconciliatory move with a kiss before they went back to the living room couch to bring Asphyxia in on their tryst. Xander worked both of them over and the ladies were just as oral with each other as him, the lack of anal here not weakening their chemistry in the slightest before Skin’s crotch took the bulk of the spew he dished out to them. Seeing a happy ending in a Stanley flick was a surprise given how dark he used to end his movies, the twist working well to combine the feature and sexual elements together.

Summary: The 3 Way by director David Stanley for Vivid Entertainment was an interesting exploration of sexual identities and relationships that did not suffer watered down sex scenes for those just looking to use the trysts as spank bank fodder. I would have preferred a lot more out of Mason Moore’s role in the tattoo parlor (I don’t think it qualifies as a full fledged “scene” since she masturbated very briefly while getting a tattoo, then pissing or “squirting” if you prefer) but I can honestly say it earned a rating of at least Recommended, serving as a very welcome comeback to a directorial voice once thought lost to the wilderness. In short, The 3 Way is the kind of feature that used to be made before the parody and gonzo craze took such a hold of the porn industry, whether or not that suits you will certainly depend on your tastes but the casting of babes like Brooklyn Lee, Skin Diamond, and Asphyxia Noir should give this one legs of a positive sort.
