The Movie:

The Summoning is a porno with a plot. It isn’t a particularly deep plot, but it is a plot regardless. When the movie starts, two couples, Ivy (Abigail Mac) and her boyfriend Nick (Seth Gamble) and Regan (Gina Valentina) and her boyfriend, are in the middle of nowhere, their map not proving useful at all. They ask a local yokel for directions to Old Campbell Road and they get it, and then we get an opening credits sequence that plays more like a trailer for the movie than, well, an opening credits sequence. If you don’t want spoilers, too bad, because here are a whole lot of them.

Anyway, that’s the first two-minutes of the movie. From there, we get another set of credits, and then jump into the story after we repeat the opening bit about trying to find the road. This almost seems like an authoring error, it really does seem like the trailer for the feature plays… before the feature. But I digress. It turns out that our four friends are on their way to a cabin in the middle of the woods, where nothing bad has ever happened in a horror movie ever, honest. Why? To look for ghosts. Things start off well enough, they make it to their place and party for a bit. This isn’t quite as ‘friendly’ as it might seem, however, because Ivy and Nick have got other things in mind, and that’s to sacrifice their friend Regan and her boyfriend so that they can free an ancient evil from the woods around them. Their ritual backfires, because of course it does, and they wind up letting loose upon this world not one but two demons in the form of the Incubus (Xander Corvus) and the Succubus (Romi Rain), who have been asleep for an untold number of years. Now that they’re back, they’re hungry for blood and horny as Hell, intent on killing enough mortals to allow themselves the ability to take on human form.

Scene 1 – Abigail Mac and Seth Gamble: In this opening scene, Ivy and Nick get busy when she starts preforming a sinister Satanic rite, the kind needed to raze demons. She sets down some candles and a pentagram in chalk and then blows him for a good long while before he returns the oral favors. After that he goes into her missionary style, Abi letting her fingers help here and there, after which she flips him around and rides him cowgirl before doing it doggy style and reverse cowgirl style. She sucks him off, they spoon fuck for a bit, then he comes in her mouth. It’s not a bad scene, even if it is overly long, as it’s nicely lit and shows some creativity in terms of the cinematography. They have good chemistry together and both parties seem to be enjoying themselves.

Scene 2 – Gina Valentina, Romi Rain: When Regan goes for a midnight stroll, she comes across the recently resurrected Succubus, clad in some neat BDSM gear, out in the woods and is promptly seduced which leads to some rad lesbian sex. It’s a pretty standard scene, though it does rightly take its time getting started, letting the girls make out a bit before Romi goes down on Gina. The sex gets quite a bit more aggressive as the scene progresses, each girl giving as good as she gets and then starting to overdo it a bit to the point where it feels performed, rather than natural. Romi’s definitely going to appeal to those who like big fake boobs, but not those who don’t, while both ladies will intrigue those into tattoos and body art. Once the horns come out of Romi’s forehead, however, it gets a bit too goofy for its own good. Gina’s got it going on though, and that counts for a lot.

Scene 3 – Abigail Mac And Xander Corvus: After confronting Regan, who has a Pentagram on her head, Ivy comes across The Incubus, more goofy horns coming from his head, in the back room of the cabin. She sucks his dick before he bends her over the couch and fucks her from behind. This goes on for a while and then she blows him again, before riding him cowgirl style and then reverse cowgirl style. He fucks her from behind for a bit and then blows his load on her perky tits to finish the scene.

Scene 4 – Abigail Mac, Gina Valentina, Seth Gamble, Xander Corvus: After her session with The Incubus, Regan has a drink. Something is happening to her and then a few people run through the woods in the darkness, realizing that bad things are a coming. The Incubus and The Succubus wind up in a room with Regan and Nick and as the two demons start to make out, the two humans get horny. Abigail blows Seth while Gina rides Xander, before Gina hops on Seth’s dick for a spin. They go at it from a few different positions – doggy, cowgirl, reverse cowgirl – and then the guys switch off and start fucking the other girls for a while, the girls even pleasuring each other a bit here and there before the original couples reuniting, and then not. This leads up to a quirky twist ending that we won’t ruin here.

The feature is nicely shot, we get some cool overhead shots early on (affordable drones really have opened up a lot of doors for digital filmmaking) and a pretty solid score as well. Production values, by the standards of modern studio-backed adult films, are quite good here. Yeah, maybe putting white tape over the license plate number of the Jeep used in the film is goofy and the CGI is pretty bad. The makeup effects to give the villains horns is… hokey would be a charitable way to put it and the acting is less than good, but directors Corvus and Visual do try to tell a story here that’s engaging enough to keep us interested even when people aren’t fucking one another. But the people fucking one another sequences do take up the vast majority of the running time, so keep expectations in check. There are ideas here that are interesting and sometimes well-executed, but the sex, as well shot as it might be and as ‘passionately’ performed as it might be, is pretty standard stuff. This will potentially appeal to less discerning couples into modern smut that are looking for a ‘sexy horror movie’ as it does have a good bit of gloss to it.

The Video:

The Summoning is a shot on digital video production which looks super spotless and squeaky clean presented here in a very strong and stable 1.78.1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. Like most Digital Playground productions, this one had a bit of a budget behind it and it shows. The lighting and cinematography here are good and the transfer reflects that. There are some mild compression artifacts in some or the darker scenes but they are minor indeed, everything else looks really good, especially the color reproduction.

The Audio:

The Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround track is quite sufficient. The dialogue comes through cleanly and clearly as do all of the moans and groans though there are a few spots spoken that are hard to make out. The background music is fine, levels are nicely balanced, everything sounds clean and clear and all in all the disc sounds very good.

The Extras:

Extras are pretty much non-existent. We get a ‘web access’ link and chapter selection, that’s it.

Final Thoughts:

The Summoning is a decent enough diversion. The sex could have felt more realistic than it does and a bit more work on the effects featured in the picture would have helped (really, those horns just look silly) but the story does have a couple of decent enough twists and the movie earns some points for being legitimately good looking in terms of its camerawork, cinematography and overall production values. The disc is basically barebones, but it looks and sounds pretty good. A decent rental or stream, if not an essential purchase.
